Prepare your new home for handover

Bring unfinished work, final approvals and project records together before the final handover.

Walk through the home with a written list

A punch list records work that needs correction or completion. Describe each item clearly and agree who will address it and how completion will be checked.

  • Check rooms, finishes, doors and installed equipment with the contractor.
  • Distinguish missing work from questions about maintenance or operation.
  • Set a follow-up date for each unresolved item.

Confirm the approval needed for occupancy

A finished-looking house is not the same as an approved project. Ask the building department which final inspections and occupancy documents apply to your home.

  • Check the status of each relevant permit.
  • Ask who will resolve outstanding agency corrections.
  • Confirm utility service and equipment startup arrangements.

Collect records you will need later

Agree a closeout package with the contractor and design team. Review payment and release questions with a qualified adviser before the final payment decision.

  • Collect warranties, manuals, keys and contact information.
  • Request final drawings or record documents that the contract calls for.
  • Keep the final cost summary and payment records.

What to check next

  • Complete and review the punch list.
  • Confirm final approval and occupancy status.
  • Collect the agreed closeout records.
  • Review the final invoice and releases.
